Father - A daughter's first love

What prompted me to write this post is the marriage of one of my best friends. She was the only child in her family and the apple of her father’s eye. As she got married she had to leave her parents and shift to her husband’s house.
Since I know this family for a very long time, I know the bond she had with her parents. I guess it was very hard for her as well as to her parents to bear up the pain of separation.
Everyone is aware about the mother - daughter relationship.  Then what about the father - daughter relationship?  They say that fathers have a strong bond with daughters than with sons. I think it is true.  May be that is because daughters care more about their parents. (No offense boys ;) ) Here is an email I received and I guess it proves the above fact.

A couple made a deal the night of their Marriage to NOT open the door of their room to anybody who comes knocking in the morning for any reason!
In the morning the parents of the husband came & knocked on the door, the husband &the wife were looking at each other & as they agreed before, they didn't open the door.

After a while the parents of the bride came knocking at the door to check on them, the couple were looking at each other, then the bride dropped a tear & started crying she said: "I cannot keep them knocking & not open the door, I miss them already"

The husband didn't say anything & he let her open the door for her parents.
Years & years passed & the couple had 5 children, the first ones were boys & the 5th was a little girl, when she was born the father was extremely happy that Almighty blessed him with her, & he threw a Huge Party for her in Grand style, people were so amazed with his joy & his happiness that they asked him, why are you so happy with her more than you were before with her older brothers?

He answered simply: "She is the one who will open the door for me"

I came across this wonderful song which has now become a song that I listen at least once in two three days. It was written by Walt Aldridge and Elliott Park and sung by a music group called Heartland. When I listen to this song over and over again, it makes me so emotional. It is a wonderful song that clearly shows the sentiments of a father when his daughter gets married.

I suggest that you listen to it now :)

Here are its lyrics

Look at the two of you dancing that way
Lost in the moment and each other's face
So much in love, you're alone in this place
Like there's nobody else in the world

I was enough for her not long ago
I was her number one, she told me so
And she still means the world to me, just so you know
So be careful when you hold my girl

Time changes everything, life must go on
And I'm not gonna stand in your way

But I loved her first, I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep

And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But it's still hard to give her away
I loved her first

How could that beautiful woman with you
Be the same freckle face kid that I knew
The one that I read all those fairytales to
And tucked into bed all those nights

And I knew the first time I saw you with her
It was only a matter of time

I loved her first, I held her first
And a place in my heart will always be hers
From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep

And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But it's still hard to give her away
I loved her first

From the first breath she breathed
When she first smiled at me
I knew the love of a father runs deep

Someday you might know what I'm going through
When a miracle smiles up at you
I loved her first

A daughter grows up looking at her father. Obviously he becomes her hero. That is why a girl always wants to find a husband who is more like her father. Normally fathers are very possessive of their children especially of daughters. They keep a very close eye on them and always try to protect them from the evil. Even though many think that the role of a father as a guardian, ends when the daughter is married I don’t agree with that. Fathers are always very protective of their daughters regardless of their marital status. It is clearly depicted in this song when the father tells the groom

And she still means the world to me, just so you know
So be careful when you hold my girl…

Every father has a dream of seeing his daughter as a beautiful bride. But when the day comes, instead of being delighted they secretly cry. It is not because they are jealous or unhappy about the groom, but because suddenly they feel a void in their hearts…a void that no one in this world can ever fill. The idea that their daughter is no longer with them makes them upset. See how beautifully this subtle feeling has been expressed in this song.

And I prayed that she'd find you someday
But it's still hard to give her away
I loved her first

It is so sad that some grooms find it ridiculous when the father of their bride becomes so emotional on their wedding day. Most of the times when fathers give advice to their future son in laws these guys just don’t listen. They think that once they are married, the girl belongs only to her husband and therefore there is no need to listen or to obey to what the girl’s father has to say. Some even go to the extent of asking their wives not to pay so much attention to her parents. So in this song this father tells his son in law that the latter will only understand the sentiments of this father when he has a child of his own.

Someday you might know what I'm going through
When a miracle smiles up at you….
I loved her first

They say that father is a son’s first hero of and a daughter’s first love. How true… I strongly believe that no one in this entire world will love you more than your parents. Their love is unconditional and they won’t get angry even if you don’t reciprocate that love. All they want is to see you happy. They will always be there for you no matter what you have done.

I don’t know about boys but as a girl I know that most of the daughters also care a lot about their parents. I’m not trying to say that sons don’t care…they do.. but daughters are more open with their feelings and they put their parents before their own goals and dreams. And as the saying goes

“Son is a son ‘til he gets a wife…

A daughter is a daughter all her life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a poem that I wrote some time back in my Sinhala blog . ආදරණීය අප්පච්චි

Well….it’s a new year after all..!

For me, 2012 wasn’t a year that I would call a good one. Though it taught me a lot of lessons, I found it to be a rather difficult and a troublesome year.  I know that life isn’t easy..but 2012 made my life extra difficult.

Anyway now we are in front of a another new year….so let me wish you all  a
Very Happy 2013…

It’s my blogoversary :-)

It was Nadeera, a friend of mine who first told me about blogs. Later on I developed a fascination regarding blogging, but didn’t really want have a blog of my own because I felt that I was not quite ready to start a blog. But when I realized that the poems that I had written in small pieces of paper were getting misplaced overtime, I understood the importance of keeping my writings safely, so that later someday I myself can read them again without having to find them all over the place. I felt if I posted them in a blog it will not only be secure but also more productive, as a wider audience can give me feedback about my work.  Therefore I started a blog in which I wrote poems in both Sinhala and English languages. But then I felt that having a bilingual blog can be a little messy. So I started two blogs, My life my way in English and හිත අද්දර in Sinhala. But yet again I was feeling insecure about making my writings public as I felt that they are not good enough. So I made my blogs readable only to me by changing the settings of “who can see your blog?” from “anyone” to “authors only”. But later on I felt that there is no point in having a blog if I didn’t want others to see it. So I again changed my settings to “anyone”, and today I am glad that I did it :)

Out of the two blogs, somehow my English blog is more close to my heart. When I go to bed at night until I fall asleep, I keep on composing poems…and when I wake up the following day, if I still remember the verses, I quickly write them down in a piece of paper so that I can later post them in my blog. But unfortunately the past year was not a one that encouraged me to write. I had to go through a lot of difficult phases that resulted in a drop in my enthusiasm towards any artistic work. My personal problems had a very bad impact on my two blogs, as whenever I was having issues I tend to stay away from everything including my blogs. But I tried my level best to keep reading others' blogs and thereby keep my fascination towards blogs afloat.

Now in retrospect, I feel that I wasn’t able to write as much as I wanted. My life my way is not a very popular blog that has caught the attention of so many people. I am very well aware that the poems in it aren’t up to a very high standard. But this is something that has become a part of my life, which now I can hardly part with. Even though I am not able to update my blog regularly, I enjoy reading the things that I have written earlier as well as the comments that I have received.

Sometimes I feel ashamed that even after a year has elapsed I still have only ten posts in the blog. It is not because that I am bored with it or something, but purely because I have not been able to keep peace of mind over the past year, which is very essential to keep writing. As I have mentioned in a previous post of mine, I feel that I have started my blogs in one of the most irksome times of my life. In the coming year I really hope that I will be able to stay in touch with my blog more often.

Finally I have to be grateful to all of you for visiting my humble blog and encouraging me through your comments. It is your feedback that motivates me to keep on writing. Therefore I most eagerly look forward to your support in the coming year as well.

So thank you very much my dear friends…. You have been my strength over the past year and it has been an absolute pleasure to have you guys around :D :D :D

So how are you keeping?

My friends call me and keep on asking..
"So have you completed your project?"
"Have you finished your thesis?"
But no one even thinks of asking....
"How are you keeping?"

I meet people on the road and they look at me and ask..
"Have you completed your studies?"
"Haven't you found a job yet?"
But no one seems to care to ask....
"How are you keeping?"

I keep on asking it from the others..
hoping that they will ask it back
They tell me about their lives, their problems and their dreams
But no one asks that one question from me....
"How are you keeping?"

Life has turned out to be not very pleasant...
I need someone to share my thoughts with...
but to start that lengthy conversation
I am waiting for someone to ask....
"How are you keeping?"

Finally I have learnt my lessons

I have learnt that
if you wait for
all your  problems to end
you will have to wait forever

I have learnt that
just because you are
nice to the society
it wont be nice to you

I have learnt that
people change over time
no matter how much you
beg them not to

I have learnt that
you must be ready to be hurt
if you trust people
more than they deserve

I have learnt that
even though the
whole world is around you
some battles have to be fought alone.........

A crying heart

Why did you leave me
I don't have any clue
You shattered all my dreams
But I still love you......

When my world was filled with tears
you gave me strength to carry on
Now when I mostly need your support
you have left me forever and gone...

Every day I sit by my window
hoping to see you passing by
when ever your memories cross my mind
my heart breaks down and makes me cry...

When ever I think of those lovely days
my heart fills up with a lot of pain
But I know I have to bear it up
because its clear that you'll never come again.....

That is all I need

I am not asking for all the stars in the sky.....
I am not asking for all the luxuries in life....
I am not asking for all the happiness in the world....
I am not asking for the best of everything....

All I need is a little bit of peace of mind and a happy ending to all my problems...

Is that too much to ask?????????
